Turn off the iMac. Disconnect the power cable and any miscellaneous cables or devices.

Place the iMac face-down on a secure, flat surface so the bottom casing is facing you.

Remove the single retaining Phillips-head screw near the rear of the iMac on the bottom casing assembly.

Pull on the lever locking the bottom casing to the rest of the iMac’s casing, and then separate the bottom casing from the iMac and set it aside.

Touch an exposed piece of metal to discharge static electricity from your body.

Unsnap the tabs on either side of the metal shield protector, and then lift it out of the iMac assembly.

Locate the CMOS battery cover, and then insert a small flat-head screwdriver into the notch on the side of the battery cover and lift up to pop the battery cover off.

Take note of the positive and negative orientation of the CMOS battery, and then lift the battery out of its casing and set it aside.

Install the new battery and reassemble the iMac by repeating the previous steps in reverse.
